Pain With a Deep Breath

I have severe sharp pain in my back that feels like I’m being stabbed in the back with a knife just to the side of the spine. I can’t take a deep breathe without pain and sudden movements cause pain. If this sounds like you, you may have a rib out. Your ribs attach to your spine and they can subluxate also.

Difficulty breathing or breathing that causes pain could be caused by a subluxated rib. Symptoms include a sharp pain that is often felt at the time of the injury. If the nerves have become compressed then you may experience neurological symptoms such as pain in the area, numbness, and tingling. Muscle spasms brought on by breathing or movement may also happen. Chest pain can also occur. Rib sublaxation can occur if a person sneezes, or coughs too hard and heavy lifting is another common cause of this medical condition. However, athletes are the most common sufferers of rib subluxation. This condition can come on so quickly and intensely that many think they are having a heart attack.

Chiropractic can help. A qualified chiropractor can gently place a rib back into place.

Sometimes it takes one adjustment of the rib heads to relieve a person of that annoying pain and discomfort. Other times, it takes several visits to restore full function of the rib heads and relief from pain and discomfort. It is important to come in as soon as you feel the pain because scar tissue can form around the joint and cause many painful adhesions. Usually, the longer the rib is out of its natural alignment, the longer it takes to stabilize and restore full function.
