What to Expect From Chiropractic

At our chiropractic office our examinations and procedures are geared toward the detection and correction of the “Vertebral Subluxation”.  A subluxation is a condition whereby a bone or bones in your spine move out of their normal position causing dangerous pressure on a vertebral nerve root. This condition has the potential to cause muscle and organ dysfunction. There are a couple of things that you should expect when you have a first visit at our office.

Our Examination consists of a thorough spinal and nervous system exam.  This includes a posture evaluation, range of motion examination, and palpation of the spine.  We check your posture because your posture is the window to your nervous system.  If your head is tilted, you have a high shoulder and a high hip then there is clear evidence that your spine is not in proper alignment.  If there is evidence of subluxations then there will be restrictions in your range of motion in and around your spine.  This may or may not cause pain or discomfort. Many dysfunctions in our bodies are silent sometimes for years, causing damage. Also, we feel your spine to check for proper movement.  All the vertebrae in your spine should be stacked on top of each other.  If they are, they will move.  If they are not, they won’t.  We pay special attention to those areas that are not moving properly.  All aspects of your examination and your x-rays should line up to give us a clear picture of the true current health status is of your spine and nervous system.

Spinal X-rays may be taken depending on your age, and situation. There are many reasons why we would not take x-rays on certain patients including pregnancy, most children, recent usable spinal x-rays and some other various situations. Aside from these situations, x-rays are a common part of the examination process when looking for vertebral subluxations. X-rays give us important information including the position of the spinal bones, and the quality of the spinal bones and discs and safety of adjusting it. X-rays also tell us the relative length of time subluxations may have been involved in your spine, and how long it will take to correct them. Commonly, most patients receive three spinal x-rays at the beginning of care. For your convenience all x-rays are taken and developed on site in our office.

With this important information we can make a more accurate determination of the time, frequency, and intensity needed to correct your spine (if possible), allow you to feel better, and ultimately for you to become healthier. Your x-rays will be explained to you and covered in detail at your Report of Findings. You will be scheduled for your Report of Findings as early as the following day after your initial visit. This visit is your most important visit and may take 30 minutes to 1 hour, depending on your questions.  Dr. Kim takes the time to explain how the fundamentals of the human body work, how chiropractic fits into that, and teaches you how to read your x-rays.  With this information, you are empowered to make an educated decision about your health and chiropractic.  You will never be asked to just simply do something (or anything) in our office because the doctor “says so” and/or you are scared into doing.  We believe in respect and knowledge.
